Biography
George Hairbrush Tjungurrayi (b. c.1943, near Walawala in the Gibson Desert) is a renowned Pintupi artist and key figure of the Western Desert art movement. He began painting in the 1970s after moving to Papunya and developed a distinctive style using intricate, parallel lines that evoke ripple marks in sand and ancestral Dreaming tracks. His works often depict the Tingari Cycle, sacred narratives tied to his ancestral lands. Tjungurrayi has exhibited widely, is a former Wynne Prize finalist, and his work is held in major national and international collections.
