Natalia Poniatowska
“It is enough that I come from a country that lies east of the west and west of the east.”
Sławomir Mrożek
Natalia Poniatowska is a rising figure in contemporary photography, on the borderline between documentary photography and genre portraiture. Born in Silesia, an industrial region of southern Poland, Natalia Poniatowska remained attached to her native region during her studies at the Glasgow School of Art in Scotland. The emotional link to her origins is the subject of several series, told like a photographic diary.
Flirting with documentary photography and inspired by her native Poland, Natalia Poniatowska explores daily life and the modern condition, evoking issues of globalisation and longing with each composition. Balancing candid photography without staging, Natalia’s raw portraits invite the viewer into strikingly realist environments, anchoring the present into the realm of sense memory. She won the award Female in Focus 2020.
