Art: the notion of fragility explored in an exciting exhibition in Paris
Fragility is a vast concept, which the multi-gallery exhibition "Handle With Care" was keen to explore in a new display. After three years of nomadic operation, The Spaceless Gallery decided to invite the gallery owners who inspire them. Nine galleries are thus gathered in the heart of the Hôtel d'Aguesseau, a sleepy mansion in the heart of Saint-Germain-des-Prés (Paris 6e).
The relationship between man and nature questioned
The Millenn'Art gallery has chosen to present the work of Léo Nataf and Joana Vasconcelos. The former, born in Paris and trained at the Saint Martins School of Art in London, tells us about his career: "I have been drawing since I was a child, and I discovered sculpture during my training. As I didn't speak English, I had to use concrete, volume, to succeed in expressing myself. The forms accompanied the words.
Inspired by the material, the artist confides: "I am mainly interested in the relationship between man and nature. Today they are two principles totally divided, but I focus on the man in a whole. I work a lot with fire, I will burn my works and the flame will eat the material. I will have as little interaction as possible on the final result of the piece. I let nature take over.
In parallel to this work, Léo Nataf also conducts anthropological research in many communities such as the Korawei in Papua New Guinea as well as different ethnic groups in the Amazon. "This allows me to question the relationship between man and nature, which is not at all the same. In these communities, the two are not separated, the principle of nature does not even exist in reality."
Since the elements are the basis of the works, a large amount of unexpectedness is left to the process. "I like to work with the fragility of the result and build on it. I burn, then on these holes of material, I will make like ceramic negatives. I build on this unexpected," he says. If his work is at first glance distant from that of Joana Vasconcelos, her approach being much "more aerial, and based on the thread", the approaches have immense similarities.
