When Time Becomes Matter l Dans les plis du temps
A Cosmic Dialogue between Félicie d'Estienne d'Orves and Gabriel Sobin
From 12th October to 4th November. 7 rue Saint-Claude, 75003 Paris
Earth is often opposed to sky, like some sort of concrete vs. abstract opposition, as though we, Earthlings, were separate from the rest of the cosmos to which we belong. Celestial bodies, their manifestation in space, their falling onto our planet remind us how close the heavens are to us. These phenomena also tell about the relativity of our human scale. Time and space, which we call ours, have other dimensions in the universe.
When Time Becomes Matter explores, through the works of Félicie d'Estienne d'Orves and Gabriel Sobin, various chronological and spatial scales that play out in the cosmos. These two unique artists who seem to have completely different practices both question a static vision of that which surrounds us and the linear logic of time. Influenced by Zen philosophy, Gabriel Sobin makes sculptures in alabaster and in onyx - his pieces, albeit solid or monumental (Écho Lumineux), let light pass through the stone and play with the mineral surface giving a sense of flux of time and matter (Transient). Imbued with the geological concept of Deep Time, light artist and 'sculptor of space' Félicie d'Estienne d'Orves invites us to meditate on the infiniteness of the universe and plunges us into a cosmic vortex with such works as a drawing of a comet reflected by a mirror (F.O.V.) or the mise en scène of a meteorite (Octaédrite).
In the depths of time grows all matter-mineral, intellectual, dreamlike… When Time Becomes Matter is a poetic display of duration in its ebbing and flowing.
