Lucian Moriyama

Biography

Lucian Moriyama, born in Honolulu in 1991, is an artist and writer who lives and works between Belgium and France. He studied at the University of Glasgow and the Beaux-Arts de Marseille, where he was awarded the Prix François Bret. He has held residencies at Villa Empain and the Collection Lambert, both in 2021.

Moriyama’s work delves into cultural and material histories, unearthing utopian forms and exotic fantasies. His practice spans painting, sculpture, and geology, integrating these elements into plaster-based works and documents. Themes of artifice, fiction, and trompe-l'œil are central to his investigations, which draw from art history, architecture, music, World’s Fairs, and exotica.

His work has been exhibited at notable events such as Manifesta 13 (2020), Art-O-Rama (2021), Paréidolie (2021), Limited Edition Air Fair (2022), and Jeune Création (2022). In addition, he has contributed to conferences at Tramway (2018), Mucem (2020), and Pianofabriek (2021).
