The Spaceless Gallery is pleased to present a special project dedicated to Sophie Kitching, whose paintings unfold at the intersection of landscape, architecture, and memory. Born on the Isle of Wight and based in New York, the French-British artist approaches landscape not as a fixed image, but as an active and shifting medium shaped by movement and sensation.
Kitching's works construct spaces that feel at once expansive and intimate. Through layered surfaces, gestural brushwork, and a strong material presence, she creates environments that invite a physical and sensory experience with painting. Her compositions move fluidly between structure and atmosphere, balancing rawness and refinement, depth and immediacy. In this space, the organic and the built, the visible and the suggested, coexist.
Rather than describing a place, Kitching's paintings evoke the experience of moving through one. They open onto interior landscapes where form dissolves into rhythm, surface becomes spatial, and memory is held in texture, scale, and light. The result is a body of work that feels immersive yet elusive.
A graduate of the École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, Sophie Kitching has exhibited internationally and collaborated with distinguished houses including Maison Ruinart and BVLGARI. Her practice has also extended to residencies in France, the United States, and JOALI Maldives, institutional solo and group exhibitions, set design for the Ballet of the Opéra national du Capitole in France, and the publication of a monographic catalogue.
