David Matthew King

American artist David Matthew King is widely known for his use of primary colours within his artistic practice. King began working as a professional painter and quickly gained recognition for his unique style and technique. He focuses on creating vibrant, abstract works that incorporated bold colours and expressive brushstrokes. His paintings often explore themes of nature and the human experience, and he is known for his ability to capture emotion and movement in his work.

Combining a poetic sense of rhythm with certain self-imposed restraints, King showcases his creative freedom through his work, all without the use of pure black or white.  A constellation of solid colours and humble components, the artist utilizes the art of mark-making, scraping and scrubbing acrylic paint on unprimed canvas repeatedly till they form a dialogue, a movement and a conversation. 

King believed that each colour’s responsibility is to heighten the visual impact of others, and he uses placement, spaces, form and composition to create a gravitational pull and push within his work that keeps it timeless, challenging emotional and linguistic boundaries and definitions.
