Thomas Tjapaltjarri
24 x 60 in
Born: circa 1965
Thomas was born in the Gibson Desert and with his family made history in 1984 when they arrived in Kiwirrkurra and contact with Europeans for the first time. The group had been following a traditional lifestyle till then. They had to come in because there were no eligible wives for the three brothers, Warlimpirringa, Walala and Thomas. Thomas paints the Tingari Cycle, which is a series of sacred and secret songlines. These Tingari are associated with his Dreaming sites at Marua, Mintarnpi, Minna Minna, Naami, Lake MacKay and Yarrawangu, which are all in the Gibson Desert of Western Australia.
About the painting - Tingari at Wilkinkarra
This painting tells the story of the Tingari ancestors at Wilkinkarra (Lake MacKay, Belgo and Minna Minna. The Tingari are a group of mythological beings of the Dreaming who travelled over vast tracts of land, performing rituals and creating and shaping particular sites. Their travels and adventures are enshrined in a number of song cycles and ceremonies. The oval shapes represent the clay and salt pans that are prominent in this country. This country stretches from west of Yuendumu to past Lake Mackay in WA.
