Francois Bauer
François Bauer is a visual ceramist born in 1986, currently based in Strasbourg. After studying graphic design in Chaumont, he pursued his education in object design at HEAR (Haute école des arts du Rhin). He later graduated in 2017 from the European Institute of Ceramic Arts in Guebwiller, where he honed his expertise in ceramics.
Bauer's ceramics often represent an extension of his drawings, creating a dynamic interplay between two-dimensional and three-dimensional forms. His process begins with drawing, which serves as the foundation for constructing shapes in space. By "redrawing" directly onto his ceramic pieces, he allows the imagery to re-emerge, emphasizing and complementing the object's form.
Describing his work as "drawn objects," Bauer blurs the boundaries between drawing, painting, and sculpture. His practice seeks to deepen the dialogue between drawing and design, and between image and object. More recently, he has explored the realm of abstract sculpture, expanding his artistic vocabulary while maintaining a connection to his design roots. For Bauer, the question of utility remains a central theme, reflecting his background in design and his ongoing exploration of function and form.
