Overview

The Spaceless Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Lívia Melzi at the historic Hôtel de Crillon, showcasing works from her ongoing series "Rescue Objects". Rooted in archival research, documentary practice, and decolonial critique, Melzi’s work navigates the complex cultural entanglements between France and Brazil.

Through her photographs, Melzi invites viewers into a visual conversation – one that highlights the legacy of colonial collections, politics of preservation, and indigenous cultures in material and memory. Her work draws from the history embedded in Franco-Brazilian institutional archives, from the photographic holdings of the Bibliothèque nationale de France to the ethnographic collections of the National Museum of Rio.

In "Rescue Objects", Melzi reflects on objects that have crossed oceans, material symbols of extraction, displacement, and curiosity, and repositions them within a broader dialogue on identity, restitution, and cultural resilience. The exhibition includes her meditative documentation of the 2018 fire at the National Museum of Brazil and its aftermath, as well as her ongoing research into the Tupinambá cloaks, emblematic of both colonial violence and contemporary reclamation.

Weaving archival history into her photography, Lívia Melzi’s work offers a reflection on what it means to recover, reconstruct, and reimagine shared cultural narratives, especially in a space like the Crillon, where history, luxury, and culture meet.
