In this body of work, Antoine Wagner explores the curtain as a central and active element of the operatic experience. Beyond its functional role, the curtain becomes a visual, symbolic, and acoustic threshold, shaping transitions, pauses, and emotional intensity. Acting as both sound absorber and diffuser, it contributes to the perception of resonance and spatial depth.
Guided by the soprano’s voice and inspired by Maria Callas, Wagner translates vocal intensity into visual form. Velvet folds and undulations become a landscape of sound, their textures echoing breath, vibration, and projection. Through shifts in scale and orientation, vertical curtains are transformed into horizontal terrains, evoking forests and immersive environments.
This approach culminates in the video work Where It Starts, It Ends (2024), which invites the viewer into an intimate, sensory encounter with fabric, sound, and movement. The spectator is placed in the position of the performer, suspended between exposure and concealment, within a forest of curtains.
