Antoine Wagner’s paintings are deeply rooted in his enduring engagement with nature, not as representation but as presence. Rather than depicting landscapes directly, the works evoke the atmosphere of forests, mineral strata, and organic rhythms through texture, matter, and restrained color. Created using acrylics, sand, earth, and ashes applied directly onto the canvas, the surfaces possess a fossil like quality, as though the forms are embedded within the material itself.
The paintings carry a meditative stillness and a palpable inner energy, shaped by silence, balance, and strength. Anthropomorphic suggestions subtly emerge, blending human traces with roots, foliage, mountains, and waterways. This body of work resonates closely with Wagner’s long standing photographic practice and is accompanied by a limited edition, artist made book inspired by Yakushima Island in Japan.
