Lara Porzak & Gabriel Sobin: Gilles&Boissier, Paris

24 Jun - 29 Oct 2021
Overview

The Spaceless Gallery is delighted to collaborate with Gilles & Boissier to present the work of Franco-American sculptor Gabriel Sobin and American photographer Lara Porzak. Béatrice Masi, the founder of the gallery, shares with Dorothée Boissier & Patrick Gilles the fascination behind these artists, who combine poetry, materiality, and elegance.

Inspired by the mineral landscapes of the Mediterranean region, Gabriel's memories of the reddish ochres and monumental quarries of his childhood have fuelled his imagination, forging an emotional bond with his sculptural medium of choice. Sobin harnesses the inner potentials of stone, a silent power or a piece of the Earthly consciousness, breathing life into a material that is known for its resounding strength and toughness.

"My work is primitive, stemming from the desire to materialize and connect basic and fundamental themes together. Exploring light and movement in the mineral allows me to unite the fixed with the incessant metamorphoses of the living. A cut drop of water, or even a sound wave, can then materialize in a surprising interaction born of these same paradoxes." Gabriel Sobin

The artist plays with the dualities and equilibrium that compose our world, especially through his mobile mineral sculptures carried by the wind. Thus, behind the tangibility of the material hides research of holistic nature.

Lara Porzak presents a selection of works from her many nature studies. Lured by the conversation with light, using classical photographic processes, Lara seeks beauty and animates her subjects with a new spirit. Using non-digital methods such as handmade silver prints and tintypes, Lara's work is an invitation to contemplate iconic subjects presented through a romantic and inimitable visual aesthetic.

Founded in 2019 by Béatrice Masi, the Spaceless Gallery operates through a circuit of ephemeral locations, going directly to collectors through a decentralized exhibition program, in new venues in France and abroad. The Spaceless Gallery brings together an eclectic constellation of collectors, collaborators, and artists, each with their own universe, and sharing the ambition to propose ever more immersive exhibitions. Its founder is committed to pushing back the boundaries of her profession: she is simultaneously a curator, consultant, and gallery owner. The Spaceless Gallery is a project that reflects today's art market: globalized, itinerant, and flexible.

Gabriel Sobin
is a Franco-American artist and sculptor. The aesthetic he develops is rooted in the material. He notably wishes to stress out the timeless nature of the rock, which is an element invested with fundamental properties. Sobin harnesses the inner potentials of stone, a silent power or "piece of the Earthly consciousness", breathing life into a material that is known for its resounding strength and toughness.

Lara Porzak is a Los Angeles-based photographer who uses old silver processes to immerse the viewer in a timeless universe, where perhaps only memory can serve as a compass. By working on the support and the handmade framing of the work, Lara gives back to the photograph its original uniqueness and gives it back its former magnetism. The aesthetic she develops, her poetry, and her technical mastery are the reasons that have convinced the Getty Museum and many private individuals to include her work in their collections.

Gilles & Boissier is an architecture, interior design, and graphic design agency. From creation to realization, each project involves strategic reflection on the brand, the concept, the materials, and the forms of the furniture. Complementary, Patrick Gilles and Dorothée Boissier oppose and attract each other. They dissonate in order to better reconcile. From these disagreements, a rich and inspired creative dialogue is born: engaged in a mental ping-pong, the duo gives shape to their ideas.
