Ruan Hoffmann

Born in South Africa, contemporary artist Ruan Hoffmann initially studied at the University of Pretoria. He currently lives and works in The Netherlands. Using ceramic earthenware as his preferred medium, Hoffmann molds familiar objects such as plates, containers and tiles into willful, irregular and misshapen forms. Ruan Hoffmann’s masterful ceramics defy norms, inviting viewers into a world of unfiltered emotion and striking visual engagement.
The resulting works are not presented as homey pieces emanating from the domestic sphere but as willful, irregular and misshapen forms on which the artist’s unedited observations on life’s experiences flow in constant, noisy glimpses of thought. Hoffmann adorns the surfaces of his plates with a vast array of images and text that can be unapologetic, politically confrontational, improper and even sometimes rude. It is work that is unashamedly loud, uncompromising and exhilarating. The adorned ceramic work expresses the artist Ruan Hoffmann's unedited observations on life's experiences.
Widely exhibited, Hoffmann's works are also in a number of international collections including the South African National Gallery, Thalie Foundation & The Frans Masereel Centrum, Belgium, the Museo de Arte Moderno, Dominican Republic and is collected amongst important public and private collections.

For the very first time, Ruan’s ceramic wonders will be showcased in the renowned BOON space founded by Kristofer Kongshaug where art, design and fashion meet. Showcasing sixty unique porcelain plates, the exhibition will unveil a tale of form, function and expression. What is striking in Ruan’s work, is his use of words and imagery that draws you to the mind of the artist, where he unapologetically expresses the nuances of life and symbolic hard truths with humor and style. Yet, Ruan does not aim to dictate a thought but rather triggers reflections and interpretations. Akin to fortune-telling teacups, Ruan’s colorfully glazed plates will inspire, challenge and resonate with one and all.
Curated especially for BOON Paris, the show will take place from September and extend until December 2022. The selection of works will evolve throughout the exhibition to unveil surprises.
